Remembrance Day Commemorate
The Maltese Islands, together with other Commonwealth countries, celebrated Remembrance Day on
Sunday 12th November – a day when the numerous victims of the two World Wars are commemorated.
Remembrance Day is also known for its traditional Poppy Day Appeal fund when funds are collected to help ex-servicemen and their families.
A solemn High Mass in St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta to honour the victims of war. Before mass, President inspects the Malta Armed Forces Guard of Honour at St John’s Square. The
Armed Forces Band also take part in the ceremony prior to the mass.
A number of national authorities, distinct persons as well as other organisations take part in a wreath-laying ceremony on the War Memorial in Floriana.
The Armed Forces of Malta and a contingent from the Police Corps formed a Guard of Honour throughout the ceremony. A number of ex-servicemen from the Royal British Legion would be present
too.
Siege Bell Memorial
Inaugurated in 1992 by Queen Elizabeth II, the Siege Bell Memorial is a monument to the dead of
World War II. The bell is rung at mid-day, each day.
It is found in Mediterranean street and there are great views of the Grand Harbour from here. Michael Sandle, one of the finest sculptors in the world is most famed for the semi-architectural Malta
